Definition of Angle of Elevation

  • Angle of Elevation is the angle between a horizontal line and the line joining the observer's eye to some object above the horizontal line.

The angle of elevation of the top of a pole measures 48° from a point on the ground 18 ft away from its base. Find the height of the flagpole.
Choices:
A. 12 ft
B. 22 ft
C. 18 ft
D. 20 ft
Correct Answer: D
Solution:
Step 1: Let x be the height of the flagpole.
Step 2: tan 48° =
Step 3: x = 18 tan 48°
Step 4: x = 18 × (1.110612515) = 20
Step 5: So, the height of the flagpole is 20 ft.
