FOIL METHOD

FOIL Method

Definition Of FOIL Method

FOIL Method is a method used to find the product of two binomials.
FOIL Method states that the product of two binomials is the sum of the products
of the First terms, the Outer terms, the Inner terms, and the Last terms.

Example of FOIL Method

Consider the binomial (5a + 2) and (7a + 4). The product of these two binomials is given by:
First Outer Inner Last
(5a + 2)(7a + 4) = 5a . 7a + 5a . 4 + 2 . 7a + 2 . 4
= 35a2 + 34a + 8

Solved Example on FOIL Method

Ques: TFind y = (3x + 2)(x - 5) using FOIL method.

Choices:

A. 3x2 - 13x - 10
B. 3x2 + 13x - 10
C. 3x2 - 13x + 10
D. 3x2 - 13x - 13
Correct Answer: A

Solution:

Step 1:

example of FOIL Method

Step 2: = 3x . x + 3x . (- 5) + 2 . x + 2 . (- 5)
Step 3: = 3x2 - 13x - 10

Quick Summary

  • Multiply the First terms
  • Multiply the Outer terms
  • Multiply the Inner terms
  • Multiply the Last terms
  • Add the results
\[ (a + b)(c + d) = ac + ad + bc + bd \]
