Definition Of Double

When a number is multiplied by 2, we say that it is doubled.

Examples of Double

John has 4 candies. `Tom has double the candies as many as John has` implies that Tom has 2 × 4 = 8 candies.

Ques: Given that y = 12x. Then, what will happen to the value of y if x is doubled?

Choices:

A. y will be doubled
B. y will be multiplied by 4
C. y will increase by 2
D. y will decrease by 2
Correct Answer: A

Solution:

Step 1: y = 12x
Step 2: y = 12(2x) [x is doubled.]
Step 3: = 24x = double the original value of y [24x = 2(12x) = 2y.]
Step 4: So, when x is doubled, y is also doubled.
