Definition of Subtraction

  • Subtraction is a mathematical Operation that tells us the Difference between two numbers.
  • In other words, Subtraction is the process of finding how many are left when some are taken away.
  • Subtraction is the opposite or Inverse Operation of addition.

Examples of Subtraction

  • The following are simple Subtraction problems.
    5 - 5 = 0
    2 – 4 = - 2
    6 – 5 = 1
    10 – 6 = 4
    5.3 – 1.1 = 4.2

Solved Example on Subtraction

Edward had 7 chocolates with him. He gave 5 chocolates to his younger brother. How many chocolates is he left with now?
Choices:
A. 2
B. 7
C. 5
D. 12
Correct Answer: A
Solution:
Step 1: Total chocolates – the chocolates given to his brother = the remaining chocolates with him
Step 2: 7 – 5 = 2    [Subtract 5 from 7.]
Step 3: Edward is left with 2 chocolates now.
